Judah and Tamar
Oak p…
Description

17th century Dutch school, workshop of Pieter LASTMAN Judah and Tamar Oak panel, one board, not parqueted 43 x 36 cm Judah and Tamar is an episode from the Book of Genesis. Its particularity lies in its position in the Hebrew text, just after the sale of Joseph, and in its plot, which brings to light an adultery that will later result in the birth of David, founder of the royal line of Israel. Tamar is the wife of Er, one of Judah's three sons. He dies before he can bear her children. Judah sends Tamar back to her father, accusing her of all the evils. She traps her father-in-law and gives birth to two twins. She is represented here sitting on Judah's knees, one side of her dress raised, Judah's hand clasping her breast. This is a repeat with variants of a painting by Pieter Lastman (panel, 122.6 x 93 cm) now in private collection (see Ch. Seifert, Pieter Lastman: Studien zu Leben und Werk: mit einem kritischen Verzeichnis der Werke mit Themen aus der antiken Mythologie und Historie, Berlin, 2011, reproduced, fig.192). The differences are as follows: the direction is reversed, the woman's breasts more revealed, the figures more elongated. A common inspiration would be Judah and Thamar by Maerten van Heemskerck, (Grunewald Castle; see R. Grosshans, Maerten van Heemskerck Die Gemälde, Berlin, 1980, no. 14, reproduced). Expert : Mr Millet René. With an important frame of Dutch style in carved wood, total dimensions 80 x 71 cm.
