"PROFILE OF THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON IER IN THE ANTIQUE STYLE Fragment of cut silk painted with black ink of the profile of the Emperor marked on the circumference " PAINTED BY THE FOUDRE - Napoleon ". 9 x 7 cm. Contained in a provenance paper with old handwritten annotation in pen "The physicist Beyer produced this portrait by a stroke of his electric machine. 1812 " A.B.E. History: Beyer was an artist and physicist whose responsibilities included the installation of lightning rods on public buildings. A true inventor, he succeeded in projecting, with the help of Ruggieri, the portraits of Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Marie Louise in the sky of the castle of Neuilly during the celebrations of their marriage in June 1810. We find an engraving presenting a lightning rod of his invention (Year XII) "with which one can make a great number of experiments on electricity".
