JEAN-URBAIN GUERIN (1761-1836) "General Louis Lazare Hoche (1768-1797)". Drawing in black pencil and blush heightened with white. " Louis Lazare Hoche, born June 24, 1768 in Montreuil near Versailles and died September 19, 1797 in Wetzlar (Hesse), was a French general of the Revolution. The most glorious general of the armies of the Republic, Lazare Hoche, is recognizable by the scar on his face, a souvenir of a duel when he was a sergeant, and which did not make him any less handsome. This collection was announced in the "Journal typographique et bibliographique de" P. Roux of the 1.er prairial year VI (May 20, 1798): "Collection des portraits des généraux qui se sont le plus distingués dans les journées de la République française". The cit. Fiesinger has the honor to announce to the Public, that he has just brought to light the first two portraits of this collection, namely those of the generals Kléber and Bernadotte... All the portraits of this suite will be drawn from life by cit. Guérin... For a small number we will have recourse to paintings which will have been recognized the most faithful. The price of these portraits, large format, will be 5 francs. The cit. Fiesinger had the whole collection engraved in small format by his pupil, cit. Herhan, according to the same originals... The price of each will be 1 fr. 50 c. The portraits which will follow from month to month, from the first messidor, are those of the generals Lefebvre, Desaix, Bonaparte, Moreau, Saint-Cyr, Régnier, Hoche, Dubayet. The total number of the collection will be from 30 to 40. The sale will be done at the cit. Jaufret, at the Palais Égalité, n° 61...
