PIERRE DE BLOIS. Opera Petri Blesensis... nunc primum in lucem producta... Moguntiae, ex Off. typogr. J. Albini, 1600. In-4, [20] f., 607 p., [36] f., contemporary full ivory-turned leather, 5-ribbed spine, handwritten title on label, cold fillet bordering caissons and boards, traces of laces (spine rubbed, some nerves uncovered, boards soiled; stains at foot of title, paper uniformly browned; 4 limine ff. out of order). Edition of the works of Pierre de Blois (c. 1130 - c. 1200), "an excellent scholar, court prelate and expert diplomat who played an important role in twelfth-century politics" (Molinier, Sources, 1902, p.201). A native of Blois, he was a pupil of John of Salisbury, studied theology in Paris and law in Bologna; secretary to King Henry II and then Queen Eleanor, he was Archdeacon of London at the end of his life. Text based on manuscripts by Jean Busée (1547-1611), a Jesuit born in Nijmegen who taught in Mainz. Old annotations on title and endpapers.
