GROTIUS (Hugo). The right of the war, and of the peace. In Amsterdam, with Pierre de Coup, 1724. Two volumes in one large in-4, [3] f., XLIII p., [1] f., 1001 p. continuous, [19] f., fr., period basane racine, smooth spine decorated, gilt title, gilt roulette at the edges, edges speckled (flaws including dull corners, accident at the head of the spine; rare russ.). First edition of this new translation into French, including also notes by the author which appear for the first time. Rendering obsolete the previous version, translated and published in 1687 by the diplomat Antoine de Courtin, it is the work of Jean Barbeyrac (1674-1744), a Calvinist originally from Béziers who took refuge in Switzerland, then in Germany and finally in Holland where he ended his career teaching law at the University of Groningen. Portrait of the author in frontispiece engraved on copperplate by P. van Guust after M. a Mierevelt. Provenance: R.-L. Anisson-Dupeyron (1829-1908; bookplate engraved by Stern).
