[FRÉDÉRIC II (roi de Prusse)]. Ensemble de 2 ouvrages.

[FRÉDÉRIC II (king of Prussia). Set of 2 works. 1. FORMEY (Johann Heinrich Samuel). Abridged exposition of the king's plan for the reformation of justice. By Mr. Formay. In Berlin, by Haude & Spener, 1848. In-12, 48 p., contemporary speckled tan calf, smooth spine decorated, brown title page, red edges (defects including rubbed corners, one very worn, light wetness in margin of qq. ff.). First edition of the presentation of the project of the famous Code Frédéric written by J.-H.-S. Formey (1711-1797), member of the Academy of Berlin, and who collaborated to the Encyclopedia. As is often the case, it is found in a collection of several pieces. Here, the second part of the volume consists of 136 pages, including a false title bearing "Memoirs to serve the history of Brandenburg". These Memoirs occupy pages 1 to 76 and seem to be an abridged version of the work due to Frederick II which first appeared in 1751. Pages 77 to 94 contain a "Discourse on the necessity of admitting foreigners into literary societies", by the Marquis d'Argenson, followed by a reply from Maupertuis. One finds then pages 95 to 105, the Speech pronounced by the same Maupertuis the day of the birth of the king. Finally, p.106 to 136, the Essay on dreams by Formey. Provenance : La Popelinière (A. J. J. Le Riche de, 1693-1762), farmer-general, collector and patron of the arts (old handwritten mention of his name on the title) ; n° 41 of the catalog of his library which was sold in 1763 2. [COCCEJI (Samuel von)]. Code Fréderic ; ou Corps de droit, pour les États de Sa Majesté le roi de Prusse S.l., s.n., 1751. In-8, 38-XXV-412 p., [2] f., contemporary speckled tan calf, smooth spine decorated in the grotesque style, brown title-piece, gilt fillet at the edges, red edges (rubs to the spines and corners, tear to the head-cap). New edition of this work forming the preliminary draft of the famous Code of Frederick II. It is the second edition of the French translation of the "Project des corporis juris Fridericiani", first published in Halle in 1749. The beginning of the volume contains the "Exposition abrégée du plan du roi" by J.H.S. Formey. Provenance: bibl. André Matter (20th century stamp on title). That is to say 2 volumes.
