FOURNIER (Pierre-Simon). Typographical manual useful to people of letters. In Paris, printed by the author and sold by J. Barbou, 1764-66. 2 vol. in-8, XXXII-323 p., [2] f., + [1] f., XLIV p., [1] f., 306 p., tan calf, spine with 5 nerves decorated with gilt fillets and dotted lines and cold fleurons, author, title and date gilt, triple gilt fillet on the boards, gilt roulette on the edges of the coupes and the edges of the contreplats, vellum covers, all margins preserved [Thouvenin] (spines cracked, one corner rubbed). First edition of one of the most famous works ever published on the art of typography. The illustration is composed of 2 copper-engraved frontispieces by Fessard after De Sève and Gravelot, 5 plates of engraved music included in the pagination, and 16 technical folding plates. The second volume is almost entirely composed of facsimiles of alphabets and various ornaments. A fine copy perfectly established by Thouvenin, who has preserved the large margins. Only volume I has a false title. Woodcut portraits of Claude Garamond and Gutenberg printed on China inserted at the time of the binding.
