Description

By L.V. Zemganno. Maestricht, Dufour et Philippe Roux, 1775. 2 parts bound in 1 vol. in-8 contemporary marbled calf, spine ribbed and ornamented (headbands and corners worn, some spotting, piece of paper on the title page probably to hide a handwritten ex-libris). One of the historical works to which the Alsatian magistrate Goetzmann (1729-1794) had to devote himself, once the outcome of the famous trial which opposed him to Beaumarchais had forced him to give up his functions. The work is not without merit: it seeks to put some order into this matter infinitely complicated by the vanities of all orders that was the Pairie of France: an honorary dignity and not a function, the Pairs enjoyed above all symbolic privileges, notably in the plenary sessions of the Parliament of Paris, and did not constitute a special Order of the nobility as in other European countries. Saffroy I, 9076.
