Attribué à Nicolo MARTINELLI dit Il TROMETTA (Pesaro v. 1540 - Rome 1611)

Coronation of the Virgin Pen and brown ink, brown wash on black pencil lines and white gouache highlights 25.2 x 15.8 cm Annotated at the bottom center in the margin "Fran. Curia ". Numerous tears due to the iron gall ink, partially oxidized gouache The composition of our drawing is very close to "The Immaculate Conception" painted by Federico Zuccaro in 1592 for the church of San Francesco in Pesro. We can legitimately imagine that Martinelli, a pupil of Zuccaro and a native of Pesaro, knew this painting (see C. Acidini Luchinat, "Tadeo and Federico Zuccari", ed. Jandi Sapi, Milan-Rome, 1998, T.II, p.191-192, fig.27). We find in our drawing the characteristic putti heads of Trometta, as well as his heavy but neat draperies (see J.A. Gere, "Drawings by Nicolo Martinelli, il Trometta", in Matser Drawings, 1963, n°3, pp.3-17, pl.1 to 15b).
