ANDRÉ BRETON (1896-1966) MATTA. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT SIGNED. Percé [Quebec], August 14, 1944, 3 pages in-4 in ink. First draft manuscript with numerous erasures and corrections written in Percé, Canada, dedicated to the surrealist painter Matta. The pearl is spoiled in my eyes by its market value which makes profession to plunge in its research, as well in the art, shows itself to the day more and more stupid, gnaws quickly of a dry cough, I think of the attitude of a Valery in front of the life, so fine at the same time as so stingy all rubbed of a small nihilistic laughter' ... The work of Matta lends to a certain point retrograde to the activity known as "paranoid-critical" that allows to apprehend only anecdotal aspects all of silhouette and that we saw of remainder with Dali, degenerate in obsession of guesses. Matta carries the disintegration of the external aspects much further, it is that for who knows how to see, all these aspects are open, constantly ready to merge that in this fusion alone is forged a key that is the only master key of the life'...
