Description

Attributed to John Hodges BENWELL (1764-1785). Portrait of Miss Priscilla Burrough. Black pencil, red chalk and blotter. H_16,1 cm W_12,7 cm (oval shape), small spots and foxing and foxing, drawing doubled Annotated on the back of the frame "Drawing with two pencils heightened with blue by Benwell". This drawing was used as a model for an engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi dated 1783 and entitled A St. James's Beauty. The British Museum holds one of the versions (Inv.1870,1008.2332). Expert : Cabinet de Bayser.
