MANTUAN (Baptiste). La Parthenice Mariane de Baptiste Mantuan poete theologue de l'ordre de Nostre Dame des Carmes, translatée de latin en francoys. Lyon, Claude Nourry, Jehan Besson, 22 October 1523. In-4° of [4]-86-[1]-1bl. leaves, Lavallière morocco, ruby morocco lined boards entirely covered with gilt interlacing and foliage, double guard, gilt edges, case (Chambolle-Duru and Marius Michel, gilder). First appearance of the French translation, in verse, by Jacques de Mortières with the French text accompanied by the Latin text in the left margin and glosses in French in the right margin. The illustration includes 35 woodcuts of various sizes, some of which are repeated, and very nice initials with flower decoration. The title is decorated with the beautiful mark of J. Besson. At the end of the book, after the colophon, a poem giving in acrostic the name of " Marguerite de France Duchesse d'Alenson et de Berri, Comtesse d'Armignac ", the author of the Heptameron, to whom the book is dedicated by the translator.
