Description

[CHARTREUX] - [DUPUY (François)]. Vita Beati Brunonis confessoris. (Basel, J. Froben, circa 1515). Small gothic in folio of 54 leaves (a6-d6-e5-f6-i6) and one unsigned leaf printed recto verso, brown basane, spine ribbed (old binding). VERY RARE. First edition illustrated with a woodcut representing the family tree of the Carthusian monks, then on the verso the 9 small woodcuts of the foundation of the Order (the 2 identical to the edition of the Statutes, in the previous number) but without the captions. The prologue encourages the members of the order not to cease singing the praises of the illustrious Carthusians, followed by the biography of Bruno, a long poem by the author of the nave of fools, Sébastien Brant, then 3 pages on the origin of the Order by the Swiss humanist Henri Glaréanus and finally the last leaf, which seems to be missing from many library copies, contains the letter of Leo X, signed by his secretary Jacques Sadolet and addressed to the prior general, forbidding the members of the Order to leave the House without papal permission. There is no folio e1, as in the copy digitized by the USTC (no. 743716). Handwritten annotations and corrections from the period, some defects without seriousness. (H. Elie, les éditions des statuts... 1943, p. 14-15).
