Description

ARIOSTO (L.). Orlando Furioso - Cinque canti di un nuovo libro - Espositione di tutti vocaboli. Vinegia, Giolito de Ferrari, 1548-49. 3 parts of 264 leaves (A-Z8; AA-KK8) - 31-3bl. leaves (AAA-DDD8) - 30 leaves (*-***8-*****6), bound in 1 volume in-4°, fawn calf, black scrolls, straight interlacing surrounding a knot of interlacing with small fleurons, fleur-de-lys at the corners of the boards, gilt title with crowned dolphin in the center, gilt edges (period binding). MAGNIFICENT XVIth CENTURY BINDING, whose boards are entirely covered with straight and curved fillets intertwined in the style of the bindings executed for Maioli. They are decorated with a crowned dolphin, an emblem that may suggest that it belonged to the Dauphin of France, to whom the work is dedicated by Giolito de Ferrari. This rich binding, in the oriental taste by its ornamentation, belongs to the transitional period during which the filleted and arabesque bindings of the Grolier and Maioli families were abandoned to be replaced by the so-called fanfare bindings. Printed in italics on 2 columns illustrated with an engraved title, 47 woodcuts for the first part, 5 for the second book, and the portrait of Ariosto at the beginning of the third. Light rings at the bottom of the last leaves, the copy is in good condition. (USTC 810650).
