[Travel - Navy]. RAYNAL (Guillaume-Thomas). Philosophical and political history of the establishments and trade in the two Indies. Geneva, Jean Léonard Pellet, 1780. 5 volumes in-4°, marbled basane, spines decorated, red edges (period binding). THE MOST COMPLETE EDITION of this work which was made at the time and which was at the origin, with the Discourse on Inequality of Rousseau, of a deep movement of opinion for the suppression of slavery. To commission this work, Abbé Raynal gathered around him a host of collaborators, all philosophers, d'Holbach, Naigeon and especially Diderot who wrote at least a third of it. The 4 volumes of text are decorated with a portrait of the author drawn by Cochin, and 4 beautiful engravings by Moreau. The fifth and last volume consists of the table of maps, 23 folding tables, 28 pages of brief analysis of the book and 49 MAPS (out of 50, Asia is missing) on double page or folding, drawn by M. Bonne, ingénieur-hydrographe de la Marine, and engraved by André. Restorations to the binding, light rings on several leaves, rare foxing. (In French in the text n° 166) (Cohen, 854) (Sabin, 68081).
