[Malta]. MONTAGNAC (Baron de). History of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, since called Knights of Rhodes. Paris, by Auguste Aubry, 1863. In-12 of [8]-24-158-[1]-1bl pages, half havana morocco with corners, spine finely decorated, gilt head (Capé). ORIGINAL EDITION printed at 325 copies, this one numbered on strong vellum and illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece on Chine and a portrait of Philippe de Colloredo engraved by Morin. A conscientious study on the Order divided into three parts: Papal States, Spain, Prussia, it forms the second complement of the history of the Abbé de Vertot and ends with the alphabetical list of the French Knights decorated with the devotional cross and the list of the ladies admitted to the Order, from 1832 to 1863. Scattered foxing, otherwise a fine copy nicely bound by Capé (Hellwald, p. 32).
