After a decline in the production of religious painting during the Revolution and the Empire, it regained its nobility under the Restoration. Taunay adapted to this new demand upon his return from Brazil in 1821. It is in this context that he painted the series of the Four Evangelists, which includes our Saint Mark. The critic praises the paintings: "Apart from the figures, we will call attention to the landscape: they are of a poetic composition, touched with strength and energy; they give a just idea of this wild and agrarian nature where the evangelists went to seek, far from men, solitary places to give themselves up to their deep meditations" (sale after the artist's death, Mes Petit et Bataillard, Paris, February 28, 1831, p.28-29).
