Description

Saint Nicholas in carved oak with traces of polychromy, back closed. The holy bishop is seated on a pulpit decorated with arcatures and leonine heads, the three children in the tub at his feet; he holds in his left hand the book of the Gospels on which rest three golden apples and raises the other right hand in a gesture of blessing; His head is crowned with a gold-plated mitre and his neck is encircled by the amice. He is clothed in an alb and a cope, with the panels held on the chest by a hexagonal bit, which returns to the front of the knees in numerous uneven and hollowed out folds. Lower Rhine, circa 1520/1540 Height : 92 cm - Width : 46 cm (small accidents and missing a finger on the right hand) In addition to the traditional representation of the three children emerging from the salt cellar, his most popular attribute, this beautiful Saint Nicholas holds three balls placed on a book. These are the three golden apples referring to a miracle that the famous Saint of Myre performed for a rich nobleman who had fallen into disuse. The latter, unable to properly endow his three daughters to marry them, thought of prostituting them. According to the legend, St. Nicholas threw three purses through the window of the nobleman's house and his daughters were married with dignity. These three purses became three apples because of the Christmas gifts that he brings to the children in their shoes Provenance: - Former convent of the Brigittines, Péruwelz (Hainaut), founded in 1632 by Louis Comte d'Egmont, Baron of Armentières, and abandoned in 1784. - Former collection Emile Théodore, Lille - Sale Lille, Mercier et Cie, October 1, 2000, exp.
