Description
STOLLWERCK CHOCOLADE & CACAO | PLAQUE EMAILLÉE | PUBLICITÉ ANCIENNE
Condition (1+) - Without a doubt one of the earliest porcelain (enamel) signs that was used for advertising purposes, Cologne/GER around 1895, the crowning (curvature) of the heavy backing material was still hand-embossed at the time, the application of a grease rim then prevented the red lettering from running beyond the specified borders, and only in the final step was the hand-colouring applied - a masterpiece of Bergmann Industriewerke Gaggenau i. Baden, 28 x 45 cm, gloss and colors perfectly preserved, the surface without any scratches. The sign is a holy grail of early German enamel advertising. Later versions, produced after 1900, already have folded edges. On the back you can see an enamelled marking that says "4. S" - so whether this is the 4th piece produced or only 4 copies were made/ordered can no longer be determined today. In any case, I know of only one other example in much poorer condition.. (As for all items we sold in our antique advertising auctions over the past years, we guarantee the authenticity of this piece. We do only sell originals - no fakes or reproductions.)
