*JODELLE (Étienne). [Les Œuvres et meslanges poetiques d'Estienne Jodelle, sieur du Lymodin. Premier volume]. Paris, Nicolas Chesneau, Mamert Patisson, 1574. In-4 green fox, red title page, 19th-century binding with original vellum cover boards preserved. [7]-310 (ill. ch.308)-[2] ff. title leaf missing, first two leaves very badly missing (with substantial loss of text), restored. Worm damage. Very rare first edition, published one year after the death of Étienne Jodelle (1532-1573) by his friend Charles de La Mothe. A great "restorer" of the grandeur of French theater, and an irremovable member of the Pléiade, even after his disgrace (following the disastrous performance of the Recueil des Inscriptions in 1558), Jodelle enjoyed a dazzling, important but short-lived fame. After a return to favor thanks to pro-Catholic writings, he nevertheless published nothing more until his death in 1573 at the age of 41, and his texts circulated in manuscript form. It was his friend and executor Charles de La Mothe who collected his papers and published this posthumous edition, comprising 234 poems and 3 plays: the various poems (Epître, Amours, Chapitres d'Amour, Chansons, Ode, Epithalame, Contr'Amour, Inscription, Sonnets, etc.), the comedy L'Eugène, the two tragedies Cléopâtre (the inaugural play of French classicism) and Didon, and finally, the famous "Ode à la chasse" dedicated to Charles IX. Although the publisher intended to publish another five or six volumes in this format, this first volume of Jodelle's Œuvres, remarkably printed in italic type, was not followed up. The editions of Les Œuvres (1574 and 1583) are therefore sought-after, as the author always refused to publish during his lifetime, with the exception of a few occasional pieces. Apart from the above-mentioned defects, a good copy with wide margins (dim. ff. 232 x 155 mm). (Tchemerzine VI, 275; Thiébaud, 520.)
