Description

JOAQUÍN SÁENZ (Seville, 1931-2017). "Bateles Beach". 1987. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower margin and on the back. Presents label of the Biosca gallery in Madrid. Measurements: 50 x 61 cm; 68,5 x 80 cm (frame). Joaquín Sáenz's painting is based on a technique of a marked impressionist character, subjecting however the figurative language to a purification that sometimes verges on abstraction and is impregnated with lyricism. This can be seen in this coastal landscape. Joaquín Sáenz began to draw in his family's printing house, the well-known "Gráficas del Sur" in Calle San Eloy in Seville, where he learnt lithography and typography and later alternated this with his painting classes at the School of Arts and Crafts. One of Joaquín Sáenz's great series is that of the printing house, which reflects the day-to-day life of the family business. An exceptional poster artist, Joaquín Sáenz has produced the Spring Posters for Easter Week, the Seville Flamenco Biennial and the Velá de Santa Ana, among many others. He also excelled as a landscape painter, and his series on Conil, its beaches and market gardens, and on the Guadalquivir river are famous. He stopped painting in 2002 due to blindness.
