Description

Mossi Karanga mask Burkina Faso Wood, pigments erased by time H. 101 cm Provenance : Paul and Jacqueline Canfère Collection acquired from Jean-Michel Huguenin (according to oral information from descendants). Depicting the antelope, this monoxyle mask is relatively rare and has never been documented, nor photographed in situ, unlike others appearing on Leo Frobenius' photographs in 1907-1908. For an example that is close to it, but whose headdress -showing horns- is projected backwards and not forwards, in the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly that belonged to Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, offered to him by the Lévi-Strauss circle, inventory number 70.2021.29.1. According to the classification, this mask, which can be attributed to the risiam style, comes from an empire in Yatenga. A particular type of antelope mask, the projected horns, reaching towards the sky in a long verticality, meeting at their extremities, at the top in a delicate and graceful curve conferring on the work an elegant and powerful dynamic.
