*Mumuye statue, Nigeria Wood H. 98 cm Provenance : Swiss private collection The Mumuye, living in the mountainous region of northeastern Nigeria, south of the Benue River, are at the origin of a recognizable artistic style, undeniably differing from formal conventions. They represent the human figure with great geometric abstraction, creating characters with elongated limbs, asymmetrical postures, and disproportionately large arms, thus accentuating the famous dancing movement of their statuary. As shown in the example presented, the statue with its long body and arms inscribed in broad, drooping shoulders, is bent, with the palms of the flattened hands turned towards the pelvis. A long neck with a less brown patina but with ochre tones, announces a small face with circular eyes and an open mouth, giving the statue a bemused look. The lot is temporarily imported and subject to a 5.5% buyer's fee in addition to the sale's expenses and the hammer price.
