Description

*Shield, Maring, Eastern Highlands, Papua New Guinea Wood, pigments H. 149 cm Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland "The Maring warriors attributed to the bright colors of the designs on their shields the power to impress and frighten their enemies. They were most powerful when displayed in groups, in motion and at a distance" (Lowman 1973:31). The abstract beauty of this rectangular shield, with its rounded upper end, inscribed in a hardwood, is accentuated by the contrast between the broad polychrome flat tints and the liveliness of the decoration accentuated by the rhythm conferred by the two jagged friezes enhanced by dark red pigments. This lot is temporarily imported and subject to a 5.5% fee payable by the buyer in addition to the sale costs and the hammer price.
