Used in Dogon country, the Kanaga mask appeared at the time of the mourning ceremony called dama. It evokes the creator God Amma, meaning birth and regeneration. According to the myth, it is linked to the ancestors of humanity. The double cross surmounting the mask, symbolizing schematically the lizard, is a traditional characteristic of the Kanaga mask. The face is elongated and schematized, enhanced with brown and black pigments, the forehead in relief, marked and delimited by an arch of the eyebrows drawn by a linear line. The rest of the face is recessed, the eyes hollowed out in square shapes. The nose strongly projected forward.
