Description

Cleopatra on the throne of Egypt, ca. 1750 Folded fan, the leaf made of skin, lined with paper, and painted with gouache. A Roman imperator invites a woman wearing a crown to sit on a throne in a tent. The subject evokes Mark Antony offering Cleopatra the throne of Egypt. Reverse side painted with a woman raising a hand in the direction of Minerva. Original white mother-of-pearl mount pierced, engraved and painted with animals including a dog guarding goats, a wolf coveting a herd of sheep, a boar running, hinds, fawns and stags.
