Description

19th century French school, French Restoration period. Black marble, mercury-gilded bronze and patinated bronze. The lid of the reverse is missing. Minor damage. Needs to be reworked. Measurements: 54 x 39 x 18 cm. Table clock made of marble, mercury gilt bronze and patinated bronze, which belongs to the restoration period. The piece has been conceived through a sculptural concept characteristic of this period. It consists of a base with sharp edges, reflecting the taste for clean volumes characteristic of the aesthetics of the period, placed on four figurative legs in the form of a classically inspired scroll. On the upper part of the base there is a sculptural group consisting of two men, dressed in the robes of scholars or erudites, who are also represented with a globe and a book, instruments that are an allegory of wisdom. Such scenes were very common in the decoration of table clocks, often depicting mythical or religious figures. Between the sculpture and the base is the clock face, which has Roman numerals in blue on a white background, with black hands in the typical Breguet style and gilded with mercury-gilt bronze.
