BUCCALIN (Trajan).

The first hundred news and advisories of Parnassus. Paris, Adrian Périer, 1615. In-8, red morocco, large motif in the center of the boards drawn by foliage and small gilt irons, spine decorated, inner lace, gilt edges on marble (Chambolle-Duru 1864). First edition of the French translation, by Th. de Fougasses. Trajan Buccalin (1566-1613), politician and satirical writer, was also governor of Benevento and judge of the governor's court at the Capitol under the pontificate of Clement VIII. His work first appeared in Venice in 1612-1613 under the title I ragguagli di Parnasso. Among the "admirable inventions, kind metaphors & pleasant speeches" that this book contains, we will quote the following news that deserve a particular attention: "Jean Bodin presented to Appollon his six books of his Republic, to which having been discovered that he approved the freedom of conscience, was condemned to be burned"; "Machiavelli banished capitally from Parnassus having been found hidden in the Library of one of his friends, the sentence of the fire given before against luy executed"; "Dante Aligier having been assailly & badly treated in the night in his house in the fields by some disguised Virtuous was rescued, & delivered by the great Ronsard François "; " Apollon makes a general hunting against the Formis, & the Tortoises, as animals of bad example of the human kind ". From the Gustave Mouravit library, with his repeated stamp. Spine a little darkened and top of the second plate unstained, otherwise a very pleasant copy, nicely bound by Chambolle-Duru.
