Palaces, houses, and other modern buildings, drawn in Rome. Paris, Chez les Auteurs, P. Didot, 1798. In-folio, half calf, smooth spine decorated, green title, untrimmed (Binding of the period). Cicognara, n°3822. First edition of the first important work of Percier and Fontaine. The illustration, in first edition, includes 100 engravings (plans, architectural sections, elevations of buildings, interior views, etc.) arranged on 99 copperplates, completed by 2 vignettes, one of which on the title (portraits of architects: Bramante, Sangallo, Peruzzi, Ammanati, Vignole and Fontana), and a cul-de-lampe showing various antique fragments. The engravings were executed by the two architect-decorators during their stay in the Eternal City; Percier had just won the Grand Prix de Rome (1786). Tears without missing restored to plate n°53. Some light foxing. Small and skilful restorations to the binding.
