English school, circa 1805. Portrait of King George III, in Windsor uniform, in three-quarter bust to the left, Oil on canvas, re-coated, size : 75,5 x 64 cm (restorations) . Gilded frame 19th century, 96 x 82 cm, richly decorated with classical friezes, a frieze with oak leaves, and in the four corners, shells and bagpipes. George III (1738 - 1820) was King of the United Kingdom, Great Britain and Ireland, Prince-Elector of Hanover. He created the Windsor uniform in 1777. It was worn at Windsor Castle by the male members of the British royal family, and by some senior courtiers. In this portrait, he is wearing the "undressed" version of the uniform, used from 1798 and still regularly worn today by the royal family.
