Description

PRINTING IN GREEK. - DIOGENES LAERCE. [In Greek]: De vitis dogmatis et apophtegamatis eorum. Rome, Aloysius Zanetti, 1594. In-folio, soft vellum (Binding of the time). Bilingual edition known as Aldobrandina, printed on two columns, in Greek and Latin. The translation and notes are by Tommaso Aldobrandini: the latter died in 1572 and it was therefore his uncle, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandi, who published the fruit of his work. The work of Diogenes Laerce, the Lives, Doctrines and Sentences of the Illustrious Philosophers, was an important source for the knowledge of ancient philosophers during the Renaissance. Some foxing; marginal wetness affecting the first few leaves, more significant on the last five quires. The volume is loose from its binding which is faded and worn, the last leaf detached and flying.
