DU BARTAS (Guillaume de Saluste). Première [- Seconde] Sepmaine ou Création du monde. Rouen, De l'Imprimerie de Raphaël du Petit Val, 1616. 2 volumes in-12, vellum, traces of binding, smooth spine bearing the name of the author and the tomaisons in ink (Binding of the period). Rare edition from Rouen of the works of Du Bartas, carefully printed by Raphaël du Petit Val. It is mainly occupied by the Sepmaine, a famous encyclopedic poem which recounts with extraordinary verve the story of the creation of the world, its sequel (the Second Sepmaine), as well as various poems by the author: the Judith, the Uranie, the Triomphe de la foy, the Hymne de la paix, the Neuf muses, the Lépanthe, the Cantique de la victoire d'Ivry, etc. The Sepmaine is decorated with 7 small vignettes on wood. Slight worm holes in the margins of some quires. Volume I, the last quires are slightly gnawed at the foot, without gravity. Small paper defect deleting a few letters on the sleeve on the verso of f. Xx5 in volume II. Mottling on the edge of about ten quires. Vellum a little stained. Otherwise a PLEASANT EXAMPLE IN ANCIENT VELIN.
