Maharana Sarup Singh bathing in a palace pool, North India, Rajasthan, Mewar, Udaipur, ca. 1865 Gouache, gold and silver on paper depicting Maharana Sarup Singh smoking the huqqa and bathing in the pool of a palace in the company of many notables. The pool is bordered by pavilions and trees, with groups of women arranged at the four corners. Double blue and red border. Dim. page : 58,4 x 43,3 cm ; painting : 51,5 x 36,8 cm Some folds, stains, polychromy jumps and small repaints. Sarup Singh ruled the Indian state of Udaipur from 1842 to 1861. Artistically, he was active in the development of painting in Udaipur, supporting the renowned artist of this school, Tara, who was active from 1836 to 1870 and whose work was imbued with the European eye inspired by the visit of the English colorist William Carpenter to Udaipur in 1851. The large vertical format of our painting and its architectural composition showing perspective effects suggest that it was done by a follower of Tara.
