WASCHKUK SHIELD, KWOMA GROUP, MIDDLE SEPIK, PAPUA NEW GUINEA H. 147 cm Provenance : Chris Boylan (Australia) Kevin Conru (Brussels) Large shield carved from thick hardwood, decorated on the front with two engraved and inverted heads, as well as spiral, lattice and chevron motifs. Beautiful native repair at the base made with finely braided plant fibers. On the back, the rattan and bamboo handle is still in place. Rich black material, slightly crusty with remains of red pigments. For a comparable object, see : Newton D., Crocodile and Cassowary, 1971. Page 106
