Description

IATMUL HOOK, BLACKWATER RIVER, PAPUA NEW GUINEA Wood H. 108 cm Provenance: Acquired locally in the 1920s by Vice Marshal David Vaughan Carnegie (England), then through family descent. Harris Collection (USA) Franck Marcelin Gallery (France) Large hanging hook representing a female figure carved in hardwood, the body entirely flat, the arms bent, the hands placed behind the head, the legs bent, the digited feet pointing to the ground. The face is smiling, the nose arrowed, the small eyes encrusted with abrus seeds. The body is entirely covered on both sides with rich engraved ritual motifs. The breasts, navel and sex are clearly represented. On the back of the main character appears a second representation - probably animal - engraved directly on the body. Very beautiful patina of use formerly entirely enhanced with white clay and of which numerous traces remain in the hollows.
