Description
PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778) - Carceri d'invenzione. [Rome: G.B. Piranesi, tra la metà e la fine degli anni '70 XVIII secolo]. A Fresh and well inked copy, probably from the third edition published between 1778 (year of Piranesi's death) and 1779. The work belonged to Jakob Pirchstaller, Austrian sculptor and architect. The watermarks are not easy to find due to the strong printing and are barely visible, if not in small parts, but there are a series of Robinson 59 (Bracciano), two Robinson 58 and in plate VII there is a larger unidentified watermark. The revised version of the Carceri marks the height of Piranesi's production and is considered his most important work, both technically and artistically. Folio (475 x 615mm). 16 plates including title (some of the plates reinforced and restored on the verso to the central fold sometimes affecting the recto, some stains and light traces of soiling, some marginal spotting, the sheet of the first and second plate lightly shorter, but with traces of the red on the edge like the others). Contemporary half calf over marbled paper plates, spine decorated in gilt, red edges (extremities rubbed). The plates are bound in this order: 1. Title Plate. Robison 29 VIII (from IX - before the addition of n. 349, but already with the numbering of the plate with the Roman numeral I). 2 (but XI). The Arch with a Shell Ornament. Robison 37 VI (from VII - before the addition of n. 359, but numbered XI and erroneously bound as second plate). 3. The Round Tower. Robinson 30 V (of VI - before the addition of n. 351, but already with the numbering III). 4. The Grand Piazza. Robison 31 V (of VI - before the addition of n. 352, but already with number IV; the plate is lightly browned). 5. The Lion-Bas-Reliefs. Robinson 44 II (of III - without the no. 353, but numbered as V). This plate was not present in Bouchard's first edition of 1749. 6. The Smoking Fire. Robison 32 VI (of VII - without the n. 354, but numbered as VI). 7. The Drawbridge. Robison 33 V (of VI - without the n. 355, but numbered VII). 8. The Staircase with Trophies. Si tratta dell'esemplare appartenuto a Jakob Pirchstaller, scultore e architetto austriaco. Le filigrane non sono facili da trovare a causa della forte inchiostratura e sono poco visibili, se non a piccoli tratti, ma sono state identificate una serie di Robinson 59 (Bracciano), due Robinson 58 e alla tavola VII vi è una filigrana più grande non identificata. La versione rivista delle Carceri segna l'apice della produzione di Piranesi ed è considerata la sua opera più importante, sia tecnicamente che artisticamente. Folio (475 x 615mm). 16 tavole incluso il frontespizio (alcune delle tavole rinforzate e restaurate al verso della piega centrale con talvolta disturbi al recto, qualche macchia e lievi tracce di polvere, qualche fioritura marginale, il foglio della prima e della seconda tavola leggermente più corto, ma con tracce di rosso al taglio esterno come gli altri).
