FRENCH SCHOOL Middle of the 17th century The Virgin crowned with tears of blood, and the child Jesus blessing, with St. Lawrence and a donor with joined hands. We read on the phylactery that the child Jesus holds in his left hand: IN. GREMIO.MATRIS. SEDET. SAPIENTIA. PATRIS. Oil on canvas (Re-tooled; small restorations. Old varnish soiled) H. 95,6 - L. 67 cm. On the Latin formula readable on the phylactery, which translates as "In the bosom of the Mother sits the Wisdom of the Father", and its appearance in Romanesque sculpture, as early as the eleventh century, see the study by Robert Faveau: Origine et succès d'une formule épigraphique.
