Description

CASTELNAU (Michel de) and LE LABOUREUR (Jean) : Memoirs of Messire Michel de Castelnau, lord of Mauvissiere... With the praises of Kings, Queens, Princes ..., the genealogical history of the House of Castelnau, and the genealogies of several illustrious houses allied to that of Castelnau, by J. Le Laboureur. New edition, carefully revised and augmented with several manuscripts. With nearly 400 engraved coats of arms, &c. In Brussels, At Jean Léonard, 1731. Three volumes. 24 by 38 cm. (34) pp. (half-title, title, subscription, epistles, preface, table)- 864-(12); (8) (half-title, title and table)-782-(8); (4) (title and half-title)-560-(7) pages. Full contemporary marbled basane, spine with 6 nerves, very nicely decorated boxes, red title and giblets, roulette on the edges, red edges. A beautiful binding, alas appreciated by a mouse that nibbled the bottom of the spine of volume 2, as well as the bottom of the board, and slightly the bottom of volume 3. Light spotting on the boards. Despite its flaws, a very decent copy. Very good condition inside (2 leaves slightly browned, the only mentionable defect). As with other copies, this one does not include the two portraits. Very numerous coats of arms. A primary source for the history of the 16th century, and more particularly for the Wars of Religion. This edition also includes numerous pieces on the reigns of François II, Charles IX and Henri III as well as the genealogies of the families of Castelnau, Bochetel, Morvillier, Gaillard, La Chastre, Morogues, Perreaux, Rouxel-Médavy, Rochecouart and Du Bosc d'Esmendreville, and numerous families of the kingdom. "This edition is the best and most complete". Saffroy, III, 37982.
