[Claude FAUCHET] Collection of the origin of the French language and poetry, ryme and romances. Plus les noms et sommaire des oeuvres de CXXVII poètes françois, vivans avant l'an M.CCC. Paris, Mamert Patisson, 1581. In-4, soft vellum with small overlaps, smooth spine, trace of laces (Binding of the time). Brunet, II-1192 / In French in the text, 74 / Hoefer, XVII-160 /// (4f.)-209-(1f.). First edition of this essay on French literary history by Claude Fauchet, appointed historiographer by Henri IV. Fauchet lists in particular 127 medieval trouvères and troubadours whose texts, unpublished, had fallen into oblivion. In addition to literary notes on some 127 trouvères and troubadours, he gives the first study on Ruteboeuf, and publishes a good number of their texts of which we have no trace any more than those appearing in his collection (En français dans le texte n°74). Second board stained, small lack of vellum at the head of the spine. A few traces of pale wetness. An old marginal comment in ink.
