We thank Mathias Chivot who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and who indicated to us: Femme assise près d'un arbre (Seated Woman near a Tree) is part of the series of early thoughts for the "Album Vollard", Paysages, realized in 1899 and which Roussel elaborated between 1897 and 1899. The presence on the back of a nude sitting with her legs crossed is a template that
Roussel exploited in the years 1898-1899, notably in a nude at the river which dates from exactly the same period.
