Description
Large stoneware vase enamelled celadon green of contoured form with ribbed body, the mounting with handle, frieze and base of gilt bronze with openwork decoration of stylized foliage and flowers. Signed H. Vian for the bronzier Henri Vian (on the base). Height : 47 cm 47 cm ; Width : 73 cm ; Depth : 64 cm Henri Vian, a bronzemaker based in rue de Thorigny in Paris (the Hôtel Salé, now the Picasso Museum, from which he saved some of the decorations), specialized in the production of furniture bronzes, ornamental vases and mounted objects. He participated in the Universal Exhibitions of 1878 and 1889 in the class "Art bronzes, various cast iron, ironwork, embossed metals". The great success of his house allowed him to build up a solid collection of paintings which was dispersed at auction in 1919. He is the grandfather of Boris Vian.
