FRENCH SCHOOL OF THE EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY. "Allegory of the Constitution of the Year VIII. Oil on canvas (restorations). 51 x 63 cm. Gilded frame decorated with palmettes. History: The constitution of 22 frimaire year VIII is the one of Bonaparte's accession to power. Bonaparte, dressed as First Consul, presents the articles of the new constitution to the helmeted Liberty, holding the sword of justice in his hand. The advent of the Consulate will see the emergence of a large number of allegorical paintings to commemorate the major events of this period, the advent of the new regime, the Concordat or the Peace of Amiens.
