IGNATZ ALOIS FREY (1752-1835). GERMAN SCHOOL. "General VIVIES, Baron de la Prade, in the small uniform of a Brigadier General, wearing the officer's star of the Legion of Honor and the badge of the Iron Crown" Oil on canvas, signed, situated and dated on the back "Gemalen zu Freising in Baiern im Monathe July 1806 von Ignatz Alois Frey" (Painted in Freising in Bavaria in July 1806 by Ignatz Alois Frey) Frame with rocaille decoration in gilded wood (chips). 52 x 39 cm B.E. (Cracks) First Empire period (1806). Knight of the Legion of Honor (11.12.1803) Officer of the Legion of Honor (16.06.1804) Knight of the Order of the Iron Crown (1805). On our canvas, the Italian insignia of the Iron Crown was modified after 1815 by the Austrian insignia of the order, with the double-headed eagle. Related work: Frey produced at least two identical portraits of Vivies at the same time. Osenat sale of June 9, 2013, lot no. 97. The iron crown is French. Biography: Guillaume Raymond Amant VIVIES, Baron de La Prade (1763-1813) Appointed brigade commander 20 brumaire an VIII (11 November 1799) he was assigned, at the death of his general, to the general staff of the army of Italy on 15 nivôse of the same year (5 January 1800), He was given the command of the 43rd Demi-brigade of Line Infantry on 4 Brumaire year IX (26 October 1800) and distinguished himself at Pozzolo on the following 4 Nivôse (25 December). With the 1st Infantry Division of the 6th Corps of the Grand Army, he took part in the campaign of the year XIV in Austria, distinguished himself at Austerlitz, and became brigadier general on 3 nivôse year XIV (24 December 1805) and knight of the Italian Order of the Iron Crown. Placed, on March 13, 1806, in command of the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division of the 4th Corps of the Grande Armee, he made the 1806 and 1807 campaigns in Prussia and Poland where he distinguished himself at Eylau on February 7, 1807 where he took back the cemetery from the Russian troops. Elected on March 19, 1808 to the rank of Baron of the Empire, with the title of La Prade, he made the 1809 campaign in Austria. On December 25, 1811, he took command of the 1st Brigade of the 8th Infantry Division of the 2nd Corps of the Grande Armee, with which he fought in the 1812 campaign in Russia. Taken prisoner near Vilnius on December 10, 1812, he died of exhaustion a few weeks later.
