Description

Princely decorated Buddha Muchalinda. Sandstone. Cambodia. Khmer Empire, Angkor Wat style, 12th c. In meditation seat on a rolled-up naga, which spreads its seven-headed hood protectively behind him. The hands lie in dhyanamudra in the lap. A flower-embellished diadem on the head and a necklace on the chest. Details of the snake scales carefully worked out. Mounted on a pedestal. According to Buddhist tradition, the naga Muchalinda protected the Buddha when he first meditated for seven weeks after his enlightenment. One day, sitting in deep contemplation on the shore of Lake Muchalinda, he did not notice that a storm was breaking. The water level rose, and the serpent king Muchalinda lifted Buddha on his sevenfold coiled serpent body above the flood waters and spread his seven-headed hood to protect him from the rain.
