Description

French school " troubadour ", after Fleury Richard Green-Green Oil on canvas (mark of Delarue in Paris) 34 x 41 cm Gilded frame of the period Vert-Vert ou le voyage du parroquet de la Visitation de Nevers is a humorous poem written by Jean-Baptiste Gresset in 1734. It tells the story of a parrot who, raised by the Visitandines of Nevers, repeated many holy words, so much so that a convent in Nantes asked that he be sent to them. But the sailors on the ship on which he was transported taught him all their swear words, and it took a lot of effort to re-educate him before he died of an indigestion of sweets. The subject was very popular with 19th century "troubadour" painters: Fleury Richard painted it in 1804, followed by Jean-François Garneray, Jean-Claude Rumeau, Auguste Couder, François-Marius Granet, etc. In the twentieth century, François-Maurice Roganeau from Bordeaux was the last to illustrate this tale.
