Description

Spanish school of the 17th century Saint Dominic Oil on canvas (lined) 170 x 85 cm (Some restorations) The white robe and black cloak here clearly indicate Dominic of Guzman (born in Castile in 1170, died in Italy in 1222), canonized as Saint Dominic and founder of the Dominican order. His successor, Jordan of Saxony, tells us that his mother, while pregnant, dreamed that she gave birth to a little dog holding a lighted torch in its mouth, with which it would set the world on fire. The torch-bearing dog became a symbol of the Dominicans - hence its presence in our painting.
