Josephine GOTZEL SEPOLINA (active from 1825 to 1839). Austrian school. Portrait of Prince Ferdinand of Saxony Coburg (1785-1851), in the uniform of a senior officer of the Austrian cavalry wearing his decorations, About 1830-1840 Oil on canvas (re-coated, restorations) . 135 x 107 cmModern gilt frame . Our man is very richly decorated: he wears in saltire the Austrian order of Maria Theresa, and many plaques of foreign orders, the Legion of Honor, the Red Eagle of Prussia, the Order of Leopold as a military title (Belgium), the Order of Christ (Portugal), the Order of the Bath as a military title (United Kingdom), the Order of the House of Ernestine (Saxony), the Order of the Guelphs as a military title (Hanover) and the Cross of St. George. Biography: Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, (1785-1851) was a German prince of the house of Saxe and a cavalry general in the Austrian army . He became from 1826 the prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, he gave to his house a royal descent which reigned in the XIXth and XXth centuries on Portugal and Bulgaria. With his wife, Princess Antoinette of Koháry, he was the founder of the branch sometimes called Saxe-Coburg-Kohary. His daughter married the duke of Nemours.
