Émile-Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) Anatole France (1844-1924) Bust in plaster, working plaster Titled " ANATOLE FRANCE " on the front Signed " ANTOINE BOURDELLE " under the right shoulder Bears the artist's monogram and the date "1920" under the left shoulder H. 46 cm Moved by Anatole France's novel Le crime de Sylvestre Bonnard, Antoine Bourdelle took an admiration for the author. Following their meeting, the sculptor creates a portrait of the writer. Bourdelle relates in his diary the posing sessions and the budding friendship between the two men. Faced with the work of the artist, Ana- tole France said "What work, Bourdelle! What constructions of frames! What attention given to the figures of volumes! What interior architecture! Through this portrait, Bourdelle conveys to us the intrinsic beauty of his model.
