Description

Askos in the form of a horse of the Selinunte group (series E). Sicilian, 450 - 425 BC. H 15,4cm, L 19,1cm. Ascos in the shape of a lying cylinder with rounded ends and two mouths. Made of orange clay with red-brown and white painting. On one side there is a plastically modeled horse's head, on the other side there is a conical spout above a plastically modeled horse's tail resting on the right side of the horse's back. Behind the horse's head, an amphora-shaped mouth with two short bow handles. On the underside, two hooks in the front and rudimentary stumps in the back form the horse's legs. On the one hand, the painting traces details of the horse, such as the mane, bridle, and legs; on the other hand, the mouths are also accented with color and ornamentation. In addition, a swan is depicted on one horse flank. With TL analysis! Left ear missing, painting partially somewhat rubbed, otherwise intact. Provenance: Ex Gorny & Mosch, Munich Auction 252, 2017, lot 154; from the P. C. Collection, Southern Germany, acquired in 1994 from Galerie Puhze, Freiburg.
