Horse of Saint Mark Venice, XIXth century, after the Antique Statuette in gilded bronze 22 x 22 cm Provenance: Matthieu Monluc Gallery, Paris, September 16, 2011. Bibliographical reference F. Haskell & N. Penny, For the Love of Antiquity, New Haven & London, 1981, pp. 200-203. Catalog notes Probably executed in the fourth or third century B.C., the horses in St. Mark's Basilica, whose ancient author is unfortunately unknown, were most likely placed in Venice from the thirteenth century. After being taken away by Napoleon Bonaparte and placed on the Arc du Carrousel in Paris, the horses were returned to Venice by the Austrians in 1815. Widely admired and studied by many scholars since the eighteenth century, the ancient horses are now preserved in the museum of St. Mark's Basilica, and replaced in front by copies.
